Chaparral Systems Corporation staff have more than 20 years of experience migrating travel monitoring data into the TRADAS system. During the first year of implementation, Chaparral Systems Corporation staff work with TRADAS users to configure the current and historical traffic databases to the system which includes remote database administration as needed. Maintaining the TRADAS system can include database administration activities and Chaparral Systems Corporation staff have the expertise to help clients with this activity using techniques that are the most efficient, effective, and least time-consuming methods as possible. Highlighted in the text below are some of the database administration services provided by Chaparral:
- Setting up users, user roles, and general remote database administration
- Database Performance Monitoring
- Database tuning, optimization
- Connectivity issue resolution
- Database integrity analyses
- Database software upgrades
- Security configurations
In Oracle, security is based on roles and privileges. To facilitate the user administration task, Chaparral has the expertise to provide the underlying definitions of Oracle roles as part of the TRADAS installation process. With the standard purchase of the TRADAS system, Chaparral offers one year or one-hundred hours of remote database administration services. Should clients require more than 100 hours of database administration support services, an additional fee will be negotiated with the client in a separate services contract. Customers with dedicated Internet accessibility to the managed server will receive an additional ten hours at no additional cost. Also with the purchase of the TRADAS system, Chaparral Systems Corporation includes one on-site trip to the customer's site for training and/or service purposes. The total time at the customer's site will be charged against the base time allotment.
Most routine database administration services are covered the first year with the purchase of TRADAS and through an annual maintenance contract thereafter. For example, Chaparral Systems Corporation staff provide weekly performance checks and monthly full-service system monitoring and tuning, as needed. Some of these checks are highlighted below:
Chaparral can perform weekly, at a minimum, the following checks on each TRADAS/Oracle server covered under the annual maintenance agreement:
- Permanent storage utilization
Table spaces will be evaluated for space used and space free. Data files will be checked to ensure that they are not growing excessively. Redo and archive logs will be checked to ensure that there is adequate space. A scan of all files will be performed to make sure that none are becoming excessively large.
- Alert log and trace file maintenance
Each week, alert logs and trace files will be purged.
- Backup integrity check
A limited restore of a backed-up file will be performed to ensure that backup processes are working properly.
- Performance snapshot
System statistics (from V$SYSTAT and other sources) will be evaluated for a spot check of system performance, and corrective action will be applied when required.
Each month, Chaparral Systems Corporation staff can perform a more thorough check of the TRADAS database which can in turn require fine tuning database tasks to be completed. Chaparral consistently evaluates various database administration software products to aid in the overall evaluation of a clients database architecture. Chaparral performs monthly checks of the system that typically include the following:
- Permanent storage volume maintenance
In addition to the weekly storage utilization checks, the allocation of system and database files to disk volumes will be evaluated to ensure that sufficient and balanced capacity remains for continued optimization and efficient system performance.
- Random Access Memory (RAM) utilization and tuning
The following, at a minimum, will be checked and tuned as necessary:
- Buffer cache
- Library and data dictionary caches
- Disk input/output
- Free list contention
- Redo log buffer contention
- Sort memory contention
- System loading (computer, input/output, memory)
- System access report
To ensure adequate security, a summary report will be prepared that lists the various assigned privileges so that these can be checked against installation security policy. This report will include a listing of:
- Role privileges
- Tables and table access privileges
Problem Resolution - In addition to the routine services, telephone support for Oracle problems is included in the standard service offering. Where normal TRADAS maintenance services would include the detection and reporting of Oracle problems, this service will provide full problem resolution.
System Configuration - Any other Oracle-related issues can be addressed under this service. These could include planning and implementation of new Oracle releases, database reconfiguration, or other Oracle-related maintenance issues.
Connectivity - The standard services offered will be performed remotely through either a dial-up access or an Internet connection. Customers providing either Internet access or a toll-free dial-up connection will be given an additional ten hours of service the standard service agreement.
