Collection Devices

All travel monitoring data programs require that data be collected from the field with a variety of different traffic monitoring devices. The TRADAS system supports almost all types of traffic monitoring device by providing an interpretation module for each equipment device on the market. As new devices are developed, the TRADAS programming staff develop new interpretation modules to support the new device. Specifically, the system supports any traffic monitoring device that produces traffic data as machine-readable volume, bins (e.g., vehicle classification, length, and speed), or individual vehicle records). The system accepts data from traffic volume counters, from axle and length based vehicle classifiers, from speed and weigh-in-motion (WIM) devices. The system supports automatic data polling and/or automatic data loading from traffic monitoring device vendor-supplied software. The system automatically detects the traffic data format from these counters, without recourse to specialized directories or other external mechanisms. The system automatically stores these files in the database, with links to the resulting data. The system stores data in a common internal representation, while retaining the characteristics of the source data, such as wheel-path weights from WIM devices. The system accommodates traffic data that do not come from machine-readable sources, such as cumulative counters and manual vehicle classification counts. The system provides access to a human-readable ASCII format for binary device files.
